According to Pythagoras and the Pythagorean school, the number 3, which they called triad, is the noblest of all digits, as it is the only number to equal the sum of all the terms below it, and the only number whose sum with those below equals the product of them and itself.
You don't have to agree with the logic of such great Mathematicians really. You've long accepted the fact that 3 is a number of huge importance and significance to the way we live and carry ourselves and so subtly, it has been ingrained in our culture of self-control and holistic discipline.
We all know that third time's the charm and in this instance, 3 is a motivator to spur us forward and a precursor for something bigger that we would otherwise fail to anticipate coming. Rationally, it doesn't always make sense that the third time ought to be the most successful attempt (who's to say you couldn't do it in your first or perhaps not even at all). But we need something within our grasp that doesn't appear altogether impossible and insurmountable. One just seems to be pushing the limits and limitations of being human while two just takes a compromise slightly too pedantically. We like creating leeway for ourselves so we feel better when we feel and more accomplished if we succeed ahead of our plans. In that way, 3 fits in perfectly with the way our psychology is tuned.
We say that two's a company and 3's a crowd. It is not wrong to say that one in this case is responsible for the difference between a crowd and a company but 3 is ultimately the symbol and embodiment of a whole, something that constitutes recognition as a community and one that stands for importance and influence. Anything beyond 3 is automatically subsumed under the notion of a 'crowd' and it is almost as though 3 has rendered all numbers of greater numerical values obsolete in the rough measure of size. It is peculiar that we have decided that 3 be the benchmark for a crowd when from a theoretical and mathematical standpoint, 3 is rather insignificant and small. 3 is perhaps a reminder that mankind isn't as almighty and powerful as we perceive ourselves to be and an ostensibly insignificant figure such as 3 is able to represent a sizable force of mankind.
3 is a bane for many during our primary years of education. We can hardly distinguish between the vocalization of the word that embodies nature and one of numerical significance. 'th' is the invention of a mad man who confused his consonant for a vowel and somehow managed to produce a sound and we have cleverly decided to begin 3 by that very prefix.
3 is everywhere. In the holy trinity, in our 3Ms framework, in our high-speed internet connection, in the final sequel of so many series, in our slang for 3ternity and living beyond the simplicity of numbers.
3 more days to the start of the journey towards the end.
Just 3.
But it doesn't make it more special than any other day, because every day is a blessing. And every day comes in 3s--our past, present and future.
