Less than a day away from GP, which essentially paves the way for an insane week of intense studying (which I'm so not prepared for--mentally or intellectually). Just thought I'd say something (cynical, no doubt) about the 'concept' of relativity and how it has been repeatedly construed to inject 'depth' into one's substantiation and argument.
It is incontrovertible that we cannot give an absolute stand when tackling any GP question so we all happily turn our attention to the idea of relativity. Poverty can be remedied to a relatively small extent, the youth of today can be considered relatively happier than before, we are relatively stupid in laying waste to our argument in that fashion.
Misread not my intention; please, I implore, go ahead and employ the use of being 'relative' tomorrow in your essay (as I would; yes curse the hypocrite if it pleases you) because fundamentally and theoretically (in reference to the theory of education inducted by the MOE), then yes, you are perfectly correct in reinstating the uncertainty of extent in evaluating an arbitrary subject. But before we sink into the comfort zones and the well-reputed rigidity of class-based education, let's think about how superfluous the concept of relativity is.
I could very well say that the following statement:
"Humans are a bunch of incompetent fools"
is relatively true. And with some form of counter-argument, we can perhaps then adjust our argument to read that it is relatively false to assert that the aforementioned statement is relatively true. In actual fact, anything, theoretically (yes, relativity is a theoretical and arbitrary concept if you had not noticed by now), constitutes being relatively true to being relatively false and that is equivalent to stating that it is relatively false to acknowledge it is relatively true.
Then again, we all think nothing is really absolute (lest I say the stupidity of human beings but we'll leave that aside) so therefore introduce the concept of relativity. Save of course our absolute hate for studying, our absolute desire for proper rest, our absolute faith in all other absolute things (you get the point).
So there are finitely many things that we can hold as absolute (hold your thought).
(Time to revert to absolute truths. Take a closer look at the text enclosed by parenthesis and you will realize they are all subtle assertions which are absolute in nature).
Everything is relative to a certain extent, even relatively absolute and absolutely relative. But if it were really relative, would there be another rationale to discuss its extent? If global poverty is relatively easy to solve, then that simply translates to us being able to carry out an absolute action in doing something about abject poverty in the Third World. If the youth are relatively happier, than there must have been absolute change in the socio-economic conditions or governmental policies which have rendered this change.
If we say that "Humans are a bunch of incompetent fools"
then...
well,
we'll all grow to realize that this statement is in itself
absolute.
