Caught "The Descendants" in the cinema today and apart from getting me out of the hell hole that is my home in which I rot, it was a rather decent movie. In fact, the notion of setting the scene in Hawaii and exposing the cold, blunt truth that there really isn't any true and tangible land of paradise in this unearthly place we named "Earth".
Perhaps it's the evolution of mankind and how this dog-eat-dog instinct for survival has filtered out our born-given nature to share and care. The survival of the fittest demands for the most brutal mentality in the most humane of minds and some might even say that the end of the year could very well be wrought on by our petty squabbles and unsettled chaos.
Fact is, we're looking at things from the wrong perspective. Albeit there really isn't a perfect paradise on this planet, there is a hidden utopia living inside each of us. Problem is that minuscule plot of land that we each selfishly possess is not even close to sufficient. The key to unlocking this enigmatic paradise is to selflessly offer our share of the utopia, to collective create a sizable plot of paradise.
Paradise is more than the tropical trees that sway in the caressing breeze; paradise is deeper than the buckets of sand that litter the ocean waters who beat about in a jerky rhythm; paradise is not what it's made of. It's what makes it.
You can have the most pristine of beaches or a bed of turquoise waters lapping the sandy beach but if the inhabitants were a bunch of barbarians, the entire notion of paradise comes crashing. We often envision a perfect world where the animals run free and our children can roam without anxiety. But that paradise never had anything to do with coconut trees or hypnotic tunes.
Everything begins and ends with us.
Where are we heading? Paradise?
