I have a hope, a flame alight /7:52 PM

Maybe this year's NDP Song wasn't as bad as I had envisioned it to be. It is thus in no honorable shame that I have blasphemed repeatedly about this year's Nation Day song without even hearing it. I had caught fragments of its tune and patches of words haphazardly laced together but putting the melody and words as one exposed a totally different festive song. And I particularly give kudos to this year's song because it inevitably invokes nostalgia and pride for Singapore. Rather than the catchy classics which we often 'rock' out to, songs like this year's or even 'Home' from a couple of years back reach deep into the trenches of my memories and brings those dead thoughts back to live.

In light of all the reminiscing and reflection, I have decided to give word to the question posed by PRI.

Singapore is indescribable in mere sentences, which is why each year, a carefully composed piece is produced and dedicated to our country. And while song and parades can encapsulate more than words, it really boils down to the sentiments of her people. Singapore is nothing without its citizens--regardless of locally born Singaporeans or culturally-influenced immigrants. We are one family and a photo montage or celebration can only come into play when each member has something to contribute.

For me, it goes like this:

1) I love Singapore because it embraces equality and justice in a manner that hones and propagates peace. The stability that governs my country provides the most holistic environment for me to succeed or participate in everything--education, career and even family.

2) I love Singapore because it is free from war and natural disasters. More than attributing this stroke of luck to our fortunes, we must be grateful and thankful for this hinterland which has been safeguarded from nature's wrath.

3) I love Singapore because of it's pure ideologies and successful politics. Democracy is the definite choice over communism for me and with an almost incorruptible government, Singapore is the envy of many.

Cheesy as it can get, I have done my part.

So what 3 things make you proud of Singapore?

Majulah.
